Dashboard cross filtering

What is cross filtering?

The application dashboard offers another level of cross filtering beyond what is available in the Global/Page filters and the Widget Level Filters. When on a dashboard, the user now has the ability to filter from:

  • Highchart widgets to any other widget

  • Map widgets to any other widget

  • Table widgets to any other widget

at the click of a mouse. This will give the user access to certain data at a moments notice that previously would take a long time to sort through Global/Page or Widget level filters.

Each cross filtering scenario offers very similar functionality such as the behavior when selecting and the updating of the dashboard, but there are unique cases that will be covered in the following sections.

For the following cross filtering Use cases, we will be using the “Equipment Maintenance Top Faults” dashboard.

How to cross filter from a Highchart widget to any other widgets (including maps)

A Highchart Widget is any widget with a graph or similar chart. In the example above, in the upper left is a Highchart pie chart “Equipment Count by Class”, in the upper right is another style of Highchart “Top 20 Diagnostic Results by Type”.

  1. To cross filter the dashboard from a highchart, first find a widget and a data point you want to click on. In this example we will be using the “Equipment Count by Class” Widget.

  2. Click on “Pump” and notice how the point is now highlighted, all other points in the pie chart are dimmed, and the dashboard has now updated to show “pumps” a all widgets.

  3. You can now deselect the same point to go back to default before the cross filtering or select another point to keep cross filtering.

Important Notes:

  1. Cross filtering is not saved after you navigate to another dashboard or away from the dashboard you are cross filtering on, which in this case is “Equipment Maintenance Top Faults”.

  2. Some cross filtering will not filter certain Highcharts, tables, or maps due to the rules set by an administrator when they are authoring a widget. This is expected behavior.

How to cross filter from a map widget to any other widgets

A Map Widget is any widget with a map. In the dashboard “Cross Filtering by Date” on the top left of the dashboard we are using the example map widget “Building Map”.

  1. To cross filter the dashboard from a Map, first find a map widget and a data point you want to click on. In this example we will be using the “Building Map” Widget.

  2. Click on a building in the USA in the upper right of the country, “South Boston” and notice how the point now has a blue marker, all other points in the map do not, and the dashboard has now updated to show “Inman” cross filtered in all widgets in the dashboard.

How to cross filter from a Table to any other widgets (including maps)

  1. In this example, we will go back to the “Equipment Maintenance Top Faults” Dashboard. To cross filter the dashboard from a Table, first find a Table and a table row you want to click on. In this example we will be using the “Diagnostic Summary Table by Equipment” Table.

  2. Now select a particular row you would like to crossfilter all other widgets on the dashboard to. In this example, we will be clicking the first row. Notice the rest of the dashboard updates to display any relevant information to South Boston.
