Performance Indicators

The Performance Indicators module allows you to visualize, review, and explore Avoidable Costs, Efficiency metrics (Cooling, Heating, Processed Water, and Ventilation), and Energy metrics (Carbon, Cost, Energy, number of Cars, and number of Trees.).

Within Clockworks, a wealth of performance indicators are generated via the detailed analyses that indicate the costs, energy consumption and efficiency of Buildings and Equipment:

  • Avoidable Costs.
  • Efficiency metrics: Cooling, Heating, Processed Water, and Ventilation.
  • Energy metrics: Carbon, Cost, Energy, number of Cars, and number of Trees.

Review and exploration of these performance indicators allows a picture of overall utility consumption to be developed to:

  • Compare similar Buildings and Equipment;
  • Identify deviations from optimum operating mode;
  • Assist site management in monitoring and control of site utilities budget; and,
  • Provide measurement and verification for improvement projects.

To this end, a new “Performance Indicators” module has been implemented which allows a user to visualize, review, and explore these performance indicators.

Layout

The Performance Indicators module is available via the Modules bar on the left of the Building Analytics application. It is divided into four sections (from top to bottom):

  1. Search Criteria panel;
  2. Performance over Time widget;
  3. Monthly Building Performance widget; and,
  4. Performance Comparison widget.

Each of these sections are described in detail below.

Search Criteria Panel

To allow comparison between data displayed across the Performance Indicators module widgets, and to avoid having to set the same data selection criteria multiple times, all the data filters are contained within the “Search Criteria” panel displayed at the top of the page.

Using the filters, the data visualized in the widgets can be filtered by:

  • Building Type.
  • One or more Building Groups. If one or more Buildings are not assigned to a Building Group, an “Unassigned” Building Group will be included in the list.
  • One or more Buildings within the selected Building Group(s).
  • Data Units system - Imperial (IP), or Système International d'Unités (SI) also known as metric. Only Buildings with data collected in the selected data units system are displayed in the Buildings list.
  • Currency. Only Buildings for which financial data was collected/calculated in the selected currency are displayed in the Buildings list.
  • Date Range in months: 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, or 36 months.

As all the widgets displayed in the Performance Indicators module respect the current data filters, so if any of them are altered such that the selected Buildings or the date range are affected, all the widgets are invalidated (i.e., blanked out). To visualize the data that matches the filters, click the refresh  button.

Performance over Time Widget

The “Performance over Time” widget provides a temporal view of the performance metrics. The selecting metric is aggregated for the selected Buildings/Equipment based on the selected analysis interval and displayed as a line chart or table.

If baseline (i.e., estimated based on historical data) data are available, typically for Energy metrics, the line chart or table also displays:

  1. Baseline metric.
  2. The delta (i.e., difference) between the actual and baseline metrics.
  3. The trendline for the calculated delta across the date range.
  4. The cumulative sum of the calculated deltas from the start of the date range.

With the widget, you can select:

  • The data visualization method: Line Chart or Table.
  • The analyses interval: Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. The analyses interval defaults based on the selected date range, but can be changed.
  • The performance metric to display.
  • If “Avoidable Costs” is selected as the performance metric, you can:
  • Drill into the data by Equipment Class and then Equipment.
  • If an Efficiency performance metric is selected, you can:
  • Normalize the data by Building area.
  • If an Energy performance metric is selected, you can:
  • Drill into the data initially by Equipment Class and then Equipment.
  • Drill into the data by utility (if appropriate).
  • If a single Building is selected in the Search Criteria panel, drill into a utility submeter.

If the data selection is changed, the widget is invalidated (i.e., blanked out), and the refresh  button is displayed. Click the refresh button to redisplay the chart once all the data selection changes have been made.

With the chart displayed, you can:

  • Mouse over any of the line points to display the metric value for the given analysis internal.
  • Show/hide specific chart lines by clicking on the appropriate line name in the chart legend.
  • Via the context  menu, print the current chart or download it to an image file in several formats.

With the table displayed, you can:

  • Sort the table by date or metric by clicking the appropriate column title. Click the column title against to reverse the sort order.
  • Export the table to a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file by clicking the export  button.

Monthly Building Performance Widget

To allow the monthly performance metrics of Buildings to be compared, the “Monthly Building Performance” widget displays a column chart for the selected performance metric for each selected Buildings for each month in the selected date range, together with total, peak month, and maximum Building consumption statistics.

With the widget, you can:

  • Select the performance metric to chart.
  • If an Energy performance metric is selected:
  • Normalize the data display in the chart by Building area.
  • Select individual Energy utilities to chart (if available).

If the data selection is changed, the widget is invalidated (i.e., blanked out), and the refresh  button is displayed. Click the refresh button to redisplay the chart once all the data selection changes have been made.

With the chart displayed, you can:

  • Mouse over any of the columns to display the metric value for the given Building/month combination.
  • Show/hide specific Buildings by clicking on the appropriate Building name in the chart legend.
  • Via the context  menu, print the current chart or download it to an image file in several formats.

Performance Comparison Widget

The “Performance Comparison” widget compares aggregate performance metrics across assets of the same level (e.g., across selected Buildings, across Equipment Classes for a Building, across Equipment of the same Equipment Class for a Building). Starting at the Building level, the widget provides the ability to drill into the charts to disaggregate the metrics by Equipment Class and then by Equipment, and eventually down to the underlying Diagnostics.

For all performance metrics, the data can be viewed as a bar chart or a table.

If baseline (i.e., estimated based on historical data) metrics are available, typically for Energy metrics, the actual and baseline are compared via two linked bar charts -  one that shows the actual and baseline absolute values, and one that shows the percentage difference between actual and baseline metrics.

If goals have been defined for Energy metrics (requires both baseline data and defined goals), the actual and goal metrics are compared via two linked bar charts -  one that shows the actual and goal absolute values, and one that shows the percentage difference between actual and goal metrics.

With the widget, you can select:

  • The visualization method: Line Chart, and Table, and if appropriate Baseline Comparison and Goal Comparison.
  • The performance metric to display.
  • If an Efficiency performance metric is selected, you can:
  • Normalize the data by Building area.

If the data selection is changed, the widget is invalidated (i.e., blanked out), and the refresh  button is displayed. Click the refresh button to redisplay the chart once all the data selection changes have been made.

With any chart displayed, you can:

  • Mouse over any of the bars to display the aggregated metric value.
  • Via the context  menu, print the current chart or download it to an image file in several formats.
  • If “Avoidable Costs” or an Efficiency metric is selected as the performance metric, you can:
  • Drill into the data by double-clicking on a bar: Equipment Class → Equipment → Diagnostic(s). If Diagnostics are drilled to, they are displayed is a separate web browser tab.
  • Redisplay the previous level by clicking the back button above the chart.

With the table displayed, you can:

  • Sort the table by date or metric by clicking the appropriate column title. Click the column title against to reverse the sort order.
  • Export the table to a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file by clicking the export  button.
